It’s another shakeup for Disney as the studio revealed that the release schedule is postponing Death on the Nile, a follow-up to Kenneth Branagh’s hit The Murder on the Orient Express and Ryan Reynold’s action-comedy Free Man.
Disney originally planned for the Free Man release date for Dec. 11 and Death on the Nile for Dec. 18. Neither movie has been given new release dates.
Delays in this pandemic are another disappointment to the film industry as they continue to struggle to sell tickets at the lack of new blockbuster films. Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot as the superhero, is the only potential blockbuster still set to be released for Dec. 25, 2020. There is still a possibility that the release date for Wonder Woman 1984 will be moved back.
Smaller features, including Universal’s animated comedy The Croods: A New Age on Nov. 25, thriller Freaky on Nov. 13, and Promising Young Woman on Dec. 25, are still on schedule to be released on those days.
Free Guy, directed by Shawn Levy, is about a bank teller named Guy (Reynolds) who learns that he’s a minor character in a video game on the verge of being shut down permanently. Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect), and Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) are also in the comedy.
Branagh directed Death on the Nile and stars as detective Hercule Poirot as he investigates the assassination of a young heiress on a cruise ship going down the Nile River. Rounding out the cast stars Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman 1984), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Armie Hammer (Rebecca), Annette Bening (Captain Marvel), and Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Murder on the Orient Express was a big hit at the box office, collecting more than $350 million worldwide.
