After bringing in Joseph Kosinski to direct and locking down Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund to return to the cast, Disney has abruptly cancelled any further development of Tron 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Disney has not released any statement as to why they cancelled the project. The film was to be a sequel to the 2010 film Tron: Legacy, which was itself a sequel to the 1982 film Tron. Tron Legacy was a financial success, grossing more than $400 million worldwide. The studio’s most recent live-action entry, Tomorrowland, has done similarly well and will likely pass its $190 million budget this week.
Fans have already launched a petition for Disney to restart the project. As of this writing, the petition currently has more than 25,549 supporters. As with most petitions of this nature, it is unlikely to sway Disney into reviving the project.
It appears that Disney will focus more on live-action adaptations of their animated films, as this year’s Cinderella and 2014’s Maleficent were both major financial successes for the studio. They are currently developing live-action version of Pinocchio.
