Stitch, the cute and fluffy extraterrestrial rascal also known as Experiment 626, is back with a whole new look. After the success of box office smash hits Maleficent and Beauty and the Beast, Disney has really started to ramp up its live-action game. With films such as Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin receiving the live-action touch, and others like Dumbo and Mulan set to hit theaters soon, it seems all of the classic animated features are getting a face lift.
Lilo & Stitch is a theatrical animated film that released in 2002. The film centers around the importance of family while introducing out of this world characters that infiltrate and befriend a human family on the island of Hawaii. While the live-action version will still include aliens and family bonds that tie together unlikely acquaintances, it remains to be seen how we’ll adjust to seeing real people mixed with CGI aliens in this setting.
Currently, Mike Van Waes has been hired to adapt the script for the remake. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback Films, the producers of the upcoming Aladdin remake, are already signed to produce. Since Disney’s streaming service is fast coming and will exclusively host some live-action remakes like Lady and the Tramp, it is still unknown whether Lilo & Stitch will be a theatrical release or be primed for streaming. Either way, audiences will be keeping an eye out for the unexpected return of this unorthodox ohana (which means family, of course).
