Disney Debuts New Art Style In First Teaser For Pixar’s ‘Gatto’

Disney has just released the first trailer for Pixar’s Gatto, a new animated film from the filmmaking team behind the Oscar-nominated Luca. The teaser, released Thursday, features three cats in an intense interrogation scene set in a sketchy feline society in Venice, Italy. Mark Ruffalo voices black cat Nero, while Laurence Fishburne provides the voice for mob boss and larger cat Rocco.

“Start yapping,” Rocco questions a tied up cat in the teaser. “Where is the tuna?”

Nero then chimes in briefly before being distracted by the dangling light bulb in the center of the room.

“Nero, focus,” Rocco says, before getting entranced by the light himself. Soon the two cats are pawing against the light.

“I too would like to do that,” the captive cat says before Rocco rejects him. The teaser ends with all three cats winding up in various positions as they each fight for a turn to play with the light, with Rocco eventually biting and destroying the bulb.

The official synopsis for Gatto is as follows:

“After years of maneuvering the canal-ridden, superstitious city of Venice, Italy, Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives. Indebted to Rocco, the local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose—unless Venice gets the better of him first.”

The first look at Gatto serves as a distinct departure from Pixar’s traditional 3-D model seen in beloved features such as Inside Out and Toy Story. The animation for the upcoming film resembles that of a 2-D children’s storybook illustration. Gatto comes from director Enrico Casarosa and producer Andrea Warren, who last teamed together to helm 2021’s Luca, which is also an Italian-set tale.

Gatto will pounce exclusively in theaters on March 5, 2027. Watch the first teaser below:
