Considering how old the Disney company is, it should not be a surprise to learn that the studio has made several movies that contain offensive stereotypes. The most infamous of Disney’s movie is probably Song of the South, which has remained locked in the Disney vault for years. Disney is also replacing its controversial rides Splash Mountain, which was based on Song of the South, and the Jungle Cruise.
Disney also edited and changed the original Fantasia movie in order to remove the centaur Sunflower, who resembled a caricature of blackface. Still many other Disney’s classic animate movies contain stereotypes, but they haven’t been edited or locked up in the vault. Many of these movies can be viewed on Disney+.
However Comic Book Resources reports that like Disney+ is blocking movies from children’s accounts. These movies are Peter Pan which has offensive Native American stereotypes, Dumbo which has the crows that are considered black stereotype, The Aristocats which has a Siamese cat that is an Asian stereotype, and the live action 60’s movie The Swiss Family Robinson. Disney+ is blocking these movies from viewers who are under seven years old, but adults can still view these movies on their accounts.
It is unknown at this time if Disney+ is going to block Lady and the Tramp, which also has Siamese cats coded as Asian stereotypes, or Pocahontas which has been criticized for its portrayal of Native Americans, or The Hunchback of Notre-Dame which has been criticized for its depiction of the Romani.
