Will the apes rise again? 20th Century Fox, under new parentage with Disney, has The Maze Runner franchise director Wes Ball set to work on what could be reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise, Fox’s iconic science-fiction storyline that dates back to the original 1968 Charlton Heston vehicle Planet of the Apes, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and written by Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling.
Since the original storyline concluded in 1973 there have been two remakes, with Tim Burton remake starring Mark Wahlberg and Helena Bonham Carter coming out in 2001. That film, titled the same as the first, went on to make a little over $262 million yet didn’t warrant a sequel, mostly due to negative reception. The second reboot, which premiered in 2011 starring James Franco and Andy Serkis, proved enormously successful, spawning two more films which came out in 2014 and 2017 that each saw critical acclaim. The franchise made a worldwide box office total of more than $1.68 billion.
There is no news yet if this next film will be a reboot or a continuation of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided on a reboot.
