Director Richard Donner has officially confirmed that he will directed Lethal Weapon 5, and that it will be the last in the franchise. The original 1987 film starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as a pair of mismatched L.A. detectives was an instant hit. Throughout the 80s and 90s, a spew of sequels, toys, and video games came out of the extremely popular and successful series. The buddy-cop movie was quite popular in the 70s and 80s, with shows such as Starsky & Hutch and movies like 48 Hrs, but audiences loved how Lethal Weapon took a different take, and the film became an instant blockbuster with $120 million grossed at the box office, even though the film had a budget of just $15 million.
In 2016, a reboot TV show created by Shane Black brought back the popularity of the series. According to Screen Rant, Gibson and Glover will return as their roles, and 90 year old Donner said: “This is the final one. It’s both my privilege and duty to put it to bed. It’s exciting, actually….Hahaha! It’s the last one, I’ll promise you that”.
There is not much on the actual plot of the film yet, but once the script is finalized and production starts, we’ll know more about when to expect Lethal Weapon 5 in theaters.
