Andy Muschietti, the director of The Flash, is considering whether to keep Ezra Miller (they/them) on for future films as the titular superhero. Miller’s role as Berry Allen went into discussion due to their controversy over personal issues, multiple arrests, and allegations of burglary and grooming. Miller pleaded guilty to trespassing in January, and they have been seeking treatment for their mental health issues.
During an interview with The Discourse podcast, Muschietti gave his insight regarding Miller’s future as the Flash. “If a sequel happens, yes,” Muschietti said. “I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys — it feels like a character that was made for them.”
The Flash received high praise during a surprise screening at CinemaCon, released nearly two months ahead of schedule, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav heralded it as his all-time favorite superhero movie, and new DC Studios head James Gunn himself called it “probably one of the greatest superhero films ever made” during conference.
Last week, The Hollywood Reporter predicted that The Flash could be set for an opening weekend in the $70 million range, a relatively soft launch for an extensively marketed tentpole film.
