Bryce McGuire, director of Blumhouse Productions’ latest film Night Swim, has confirmed that he has many ideas for possible sequel to the horror film, but notes that this will ultimately be dependent on the audience’s level of enthusiasm. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, McGuire said, “Look, if there were to be a sequel, I do have an idea, and there’s lots more of the mythology…I just wanted this first one to be so simple and archetypal. There’s lots more that has already been discussed and could have been in the movie that I would love to get to explore, if people want more.”
Last year, Blumhouse released M3GAN at the start of the year. The PG-13 horror film was a major success amongst audiences and critics, despite January releases and PG-13 horror films not receiving much enthusiasm. M3GAN’s success has led to the development of a sequel, so it seems Blumhouse is attempting to reproduce these results with its own January release of Night Swim, another PG-13 horror film. However, it does not look like Night Swim will generate the same level of enthusiasm from audiences as M3GAN did.
Night Swim is written and directed by McGuire and is based on his and Rod Blackhurst’s 2014 short film. The film stars Wyatt Russell as Ray Waller, Kerry Condon as his wife Eve, Amélie Hoeferle as his teen daughter, and Gavin Warren as his young son.
James Wan and Jason Blum both serve as producers for the film. Additionally, Michael Clear, Judson Scott for Wan’s Atomic Monster, and Ryan Turek for Blum’s Blumhouse all serve as executive producers.
Night Swim is currently out in theaters now.
