Director and Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino has offered a new status update regarding a potential sequel to Marvel Studios’ 2022 Halloween special Werewolf by Night.
Speaking on the red carpet, Giacchino addressed the status of the follow-up project, confirming that while discussions with Marvel Studios remain active, no official greenlight or production timeline has been locked in by the studio. Giacchino noted that navigating studio scheduling and franchise planning requires extensive coordination, adding that project development within a larger interconnected universe moves deliberately.
The original Werewolf by Night special, which marked Giacchino’s feature-length directorial debut following decades of composing film scores, premiered on Disney+ in October 2022. Shot primarily in black-and-white to homage classic Universal monster movies, the special starred Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a cursed monster hunter who attempts to navigate a lethal competition among rival hunters at Bloodstone Temple. The cast also featured Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, Harriet Sansom Harris as Verussa Bloodstone, and Carey Jones providing physical performance for the creature Man-Thing. A remastered, full-color edition of the special was subsequently released on Disney+ in October 2023.
While Marvel Studios has not officially placed a sequel on its immediate theatrical or streaming release calendar, Giacchino has continued exploring the character across media formats, including writing the Marvel Comics one-shot issue Werewolf by Night: Blood Moon Rise. Marvel Studios has not announced official production dates or cast attachments for a secondary Werewolf by Night live-action release.
