The sequel to 2014’s action film John Wick had its directors returning in David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, but it has been made clear that one-half of that successful team has left the project and signed on to helm the upcoming Charlize Theron film The Coldest City.
Leitch, who frequently collaborates with Stahelski, pulled out of John Wick 2 after Theron’s availability to shoot the spy thriller conflicted with the John Wick sequel, starring Keanu Reeves.
Originally, both directors were to also co-direct The Coldest City, but now each project will see the two men conducting the films separately. There are no hard feelings between the two as Leitch still acts as an executive producer on John Wick 2.
The Coldest City is based on the 2012 graphic novel by Anthony Johnston, which takes place in 1989 amidst the collapse of communism in Germany. In the film version, Theron plays a spy who is trying to find a mysterious list that contains the names of every secret agent who was working in Berlin.
Both films are set to begin filming this fall.
