Direct Sequel to ‘Cloverfield’ in the Works With JJ Abrams Set to Produce

Per The Hollywood Reporterthe popular 2008 monster flick Cloverfield is getting direct sequel with JJ Abrams set to produce under his Bad Robot production company. The film will not be found footage, but will be a follow-up in someway tot the story started in 2008.

Cloverfield is one of the strangest franchise that many forget is a franchise. Aside from the original film, helmed by now Batman director Matt Reeves, the series has seen two spin-offs in 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield Paradox. The latter of the two making headlines for announcing its existence and release date during the 2018 Super Bowl.

While both of the spin-offs were converted into Cloverfield films, this sequel will be a lot different than those. Those films were originally something else entirely, but that process worked only half the time. 10 Cloverfield Lane was regarded highly with two great performances, while Paradox just did not mesh completely.

This time around Batman showrunner, Joe Barton, is set to pen the script for the film. Aside from that, little details are currently known about the plot of the sequel.

However, as far as franchises go, Cloverfield, while strange, has been a lot of fun to see over the years. A new Cloverfield movie is kind of like seeing an old friend from high school again. You know them, are familiar with how they act, but at the end of the day they are constantly evolving and frankly you never know what to expect.

Nothing else is known currently about the sequel, but it can be expected in the next few years, unless they’ve already made it fully and are waiting to announce it during the 2021 Super Bowl.
