Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for Dream helped to launch not only his career but also Jared Leto’s career as an actor. And now, twenty years later, it looks like the two are teaming up again on new film, which is being produced by Jason Blum, titled, Adrift. Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Carla Hacken will also produce through the actor’s production company Paradox.
The film is based on a short story by The Ring writer Koji Suzuki, which follows a fishing boat that discovers an abandoned yacht with a strange distress signal. A deckhand decides to take control of the ship as it’s towed into port, but he soon discovers why his fellow crewmates call it a “ghost ship.”
Leto reportedly identified the project and pursued the rights for 10 years before bringing it to Aronofsky and Blum. The project just recently went out on the market, and while it looks like MGM is already in exclusive negotiations to acquire Adrift, the deal hasn’t officially closed.
This won’t be Aronofsky’s next film, however. The director is currently gearing up for A24’s The Whale, which will star Brendan Fraser and is set to begin production in March.
Leto has also been busy. He starred in Warner Bros.’ crime thriller The Little Things alongside Denzel Washington and Rami Malek, which dropped on HBO Max yesterday. The actor is also starring in sequel to Tron: Legacy as well as the Spider-Man spinoff Morbius. Leto will also play role in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gucci, and he’ll reprise his role as the Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a director’s cut of the original 2017 superhero film.
