Dimension Moves Production of ’47 Meters Down’ Underway

Dimension Films is on board with distribution rights to 47 Meters Down, an underwater film about two sisters stuck in a sunken observation cage. British filmmaker Johannes Roberts is directing this nautical adventure.

The stakes will be high when sisters become trapped at the bottom of the ocean after a cage diving exhibition to observe Great White sharks goes awry. The sisters struggle to stay alive with a minimal amount of oxygen left in their tanks, as they attempt to avoid sharks and travel through 47 meters of waters to find their boat.

Roberts is best known for directing Storage 24 (2012), a horror/sci-fi film about people trapped inside a storage facility during a city lockdown after a military plane crash. Clearly accustomed to recreating high-tension worlds, , 47 Meters Down seems like it’s right in the director’s wheelhouse (although we’ll hope he isn’t creatively too…confined…by the similar premise).

Dimension co-chairman Bob Weinstein was inspired by the edgy scripts’ tension and adventure. Said Weinstein in a statement, “I look forward to working with Johannes to bring audiences a very unique edge of your seat thrill-ride.”

Mark Lane and James Harris are producing this picture through their Tea Shop and Film Company. Nautical films have been on something of a hot streak lately, with J.C. Chandor’s All Is Lost (2013) and Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips (2013) – which was nominated for 6 Oscars – both released last year, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi the year before, and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken expected this Christmas. Dimension is hardly known for these sort of prestige pictures, but they do have a knack for producing unique action thrillers (such as Sin City and its forthcoming sequel), so perhaps 47 Meters Down will be able to piggyback off of the successes of both.

47 Meters Down will be overseen by Dimension’s Matthew Singer, vice president of production and creative affairs, and Keith Levineand Walak, vice president of production and development. Cast and an expected release date have yet to be announced, but we’ll keep you appraised of all the details we hear them.
