In the vein of Sliding Doors, Christopher Smith’s (Creep) latest film Detour explores the big “what-ifs” in the form of a homicidal grieving son. Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Aplocalypse) stars as Harper, young law student who has recently lost his mother and is contemplating killing his unfaithful step-father (Stephen Moyer, True Blood). He turns to the help of a grifter, Johnny Ray (Emory Cohen, Brooklyn), to help him settle the score. Harper gets lot more than he bargained for once Johnny Ray and his stripper companion Cherry (Bel Powley, Diary of a Teenage Girl) seem to want to make good on Harper’s nefarious desires, turning him toward a literal inner battle between the light and dark within him.
The English director Smith certainly got a who’s-who of Young Hollywood talent to carry his ambitious crime thriller. Ever since starring in Jeff Nichol’s Mud, Sheridan has not taken a breath, starring in big blockbusters and indies alike, and nabbing the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Cohen, who had his first big break in Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines, moved heads last year with his romantic leading role in Brooklyn. Powley had a similar breakout year in 2015, starring in the indie darling The Diary of a Teenage Girl. The trio seem to all be pushing their comfort zones for this one and the result looks like a wild ride.
