Dessert Warrior, the action “epic” starring Anthony Mackie, is on its way to becoming one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. The film grossed only $487,000 in its domestic debut across roughly 1,000 theaters, making it one of the lowest-grossing domestic box-office debuts of all time. With total grosses in other territories of only $29,000, the film has made approximately $517,000 worldwide.
The film was Saudi Arabian-funded. Its budget makes it the most expensive film to be produced in the country. Its box office performance also makes it one of the lowest-grossing films produced in the country.
The film was directed by Rupert Wyatt, director of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. In addition to Mackie, the film also stars Ben Kingsley, Aiyasha Hart, and Sharlto Copley.
As well as being a financial flop, the film hasn’t been received well by critics. Currently, the film has a rotten 29% Critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The films audience score is slightly more forgiving at a 61%. In other places, its critical response is mixed to negative, with the film having an abysmal 2.6/10 average rating on IMDB and a mixed 61 Metacritic score.
For those still interested in the film, Desert Warrior is still showing in theaters.
