It’s going to be one of the most fashionable weekends for the box office this year. The long awaited Devil Wears Prada 2 has hit theaters, and is already making major waves on the day of its debut.
Although close to the end of her iconic career, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) begins to formulate the plans on how to go out in style. Reconnecting with her former assistant, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), she begins to formulate a plan to pit herself against Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), her once-assistant who’s now her biggest competitor.
Although it’s been nearly 20 years to the day that the first Devil Wears Prada hit the scene, the revenue for its sequel more than proves that there is still an audience for it. The Friday screenings (with Thursday previews included) managed to bring in $32.5 million alone, with Hollywood Reporter noting that the single day gross already surpasses the $27.5 million domestic opening of the first Devil Wears Prada. Already a bonafide success, it’s looking to bring in upwards of $80 million domestically by the end of Sunday.
The success of Devil Wears Prada 2 comes alongside the start of the summer movie season, and kicks it off in a new way. Hollywood Reporter also noted that this is the first time the summer stretch has started with a female-led film, boasting the leading talents of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt. The commencement of this extremely lucrative time is commonly reserved for big budget action spectacles. Just last year, it started with Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, which focused on the MCU’s new team of outcasts trying to turn a new leaf, opening to a domestic total (per BoxOfficeMojo) of $74 million.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is now playing in theaters.
