It was announced on Thursday that Dermot Mulroney will join Idris Elba and Kate Winslet in the film adaptation of romantic drama The Mountain Between Us. The film, which is being directed by Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad, has already started filming up in Vancouver, Canada, where the production has been going since early December.
The story is based on Charles Martin’s 2011 novel, which follows two individuals, a doctor and a writer, who enlist a charter plane from Salt Lake City to take them to the east coast, only to become the only two survivors of a plane crash that lands them in the wilderness of Utah. Faced with harsh winter weather conditions, and injuries from the crash, the two begin to form a romantic connection in the bitter cold of the High Uintas Wilderness.
The pairing of Idris Elba and Kate Winslet is the third pairing to be cast as the leading roles of Dr Ben Payne and Ashley Knox. Originally Michael Fassbender and Margot Robbie were set to play the roles, but when Fassbender dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, so did Robbie. Then Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike were cast, but both dropped out for unknown reasons.
There is still no word what supporting role Mulroney will play, but given the plot of the story, it can be predicted that he will either be featured in flashbacks, or portray the pilot whose heart attack causes the plane to crash (but we will just have to see!)
Mulroney, most well-known for his role opposite Julia Roberts in the 1997 film My Best Friends Wedding, can now be seen in crime thriller Sleepless beside Jamie Foxx, Gabrielle Union, and Michelle Monaghan. Aside from his acting career, Mulroney has been contributing to films in a different manner: performing music as a classically-trained cellist for films such as Rogue One and Star Trek Into Darkness.
The Mountain Between Us is due in theaters October 2017.
