Zoe Saldana to Star in Action-Thriller ’Hummingbird’

Announced on Thursday, Zoe Saldana will star as the lead in the action-thriller Hummingbird. The film focuses on a black female ops assassin who begins to question her profession when put on a questionable assignment.

Meanwhile, Saldana is set to reprise her role of Neytiri in the next three of James Cameron’s Avatar movies, as well as reprise her role as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. Saldana is also set to produce the tv series Hell or High Water (not to be confused with last year’s feature film) which is based off of Joy Castro’s novel, where a female news reporter investigates the underworld of New Orleans.

Screenwriter John McClain was recently a 2016 Sundance Story Lab Fellow for his script Marfa. He has an MFA from UCLA and previously was a previously a writers assistant on WGN America’s tv series Underground. The script for Hummingbird was previously listed on Hollywood’s infamous Black List for the best unproduced screenplays.

Directors Markus Kryler and Fredrik Akerstrom have previously directed the cinematic content for the EA’s Battlefield 1 video game which, to date, has sold more than 14 million copies.

Broken Road Productions and Fundamental Films will produce the film. Broken Road just finished filming the Netflix comedy True Memoirs of an International Assassin with Kevin James. Fundamental Films is preparing for release of 24 Hours to Live with Ethan Hawke and Replicas starring Keanu Reeves.

The rights for international and domestic distribution for Hummingbird will be up for grabs at European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival next week.
