Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt Face Insurmountable Odds in ‘The Magnificent Seven’ Trailer

Despite their popularity in the 50s and 60s, Western films of the 21st century have not been able to live up to the original grandiose epics. But, of course, during the year of remakes, reboots and sequels, director Antoine Fuqua has taken upon himself to remake the 1960 classic The Magnificent Seven, which (ironically) is already a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.

Based on the trailer, Fuqua maintains the same Old West aesthetics and blood-pumping action complete with horses, guns and many buckets of bullets. However, he modernizes The Magnificent Seven by following a trend seemingly set by Baz Luhrmann and The Great Gatsby, where modern rap music plays in the background as the vigilantes prepare for a Western brawl. Denzel Washington reunites with his Training Day director, and is joined by the star-of-the-moment Chris Pratt, Peter Sarsgaard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ethan Hawke, Lee Byung-hun, Matt Bomer and Haley Bennett.

The official synopsis is as follows: “Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to the classic story of The Magnificent Seven. As the town Rose Krick is put under the siege of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the town’s residents enlist the help of seven outlaws, headed by bounty hunter Sam Chisolm, to protect them while they prepare for the violent confrontation that is anticipated. However, upon meeting the town’s residents, the Seven find themselves fighting for much more than money.”

The Magnificent Seven rides into theaters on Sept. 23. Watch the trailer below.
