Just like all the theaters in the rest of the world, Japan’s movie theaters have been struggling during the pandemic. However despite the pandemic the movie Demon Slayer is smashing or ahem slaying several box office records.
The movie, which full title is Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train, was released in Japan last month on October 16th. Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train is based on a popular anime and manga series called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. The series is about a brother and sister named Tanjiro and Nezuko respectively. When their family is attacked by demons, Nezuko becomes cursed and turns into a demon. The siblings then join forces with a demon slayer named Giyū Tomioka in order to avenge their family and cure Nezuko.
According to Crunchyroll Demon Slayer has been the number one movie in Japan for the past five weeks. In the month since its release Demon Slayer has earned more than 23,000,000,000 at the box, which is about $220,683,827 in the US. Deadline reported that Demon Slayer also set a record for IMAX movie in Japan. Crunchyroll also reported that Demon Slayer is the 8th highest grossing 2020 movie world wide. It is the highest grossing 2020 movie in Japan, and the 5th highest grossing movie in Japan of all time. There is a strong possibility that Demon Slayer will surpass Japan’s 4th highest grossing movie Your Name.
