Delroy Lindo’s (Sinners) directorial debut, Jabari’s People, is adding Winston Duke (Black Panther), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without a Trace), Wendell Pierce (The Wire) and new-comer Seyi Andes-Pelumi to it’s cast. “I’ve had a pinch me moments as actors have had turned in performances or said lines in a certain way that was on the page. They’re bringing the actual words to life. I’m pinching myself and saying, ‘Oh, it’s really happening,'” Lindo told The Hollywood Reporter. The film is being written by Daoud Abeid and Dakhil Hausif as their first feature film screenplay. The movie is set in Brooklyn as well as Jamaica and follows Jabari, a teenager who has to live with his estranged grandparents after the death of his mother.
The story was originally brought to Lindo in 2015 where he was offered a role that never happened. Around 2021 Lindo heard the rights for the movie was being sold and optioned it, which means he has the rights to film and doesn’t have to make the film right away. “From the time I got the rights, I knew I was going to direct this. It touched me in my soul as a person of Jamaican extraction,” Lindo commented. More information has yet to be released about the film.
