The Deauville American Film Festival will be one of the rare festivals to host physical edition during this unprecedented time amid the coronavirus pandemic. This year, the festival will also showcase 10 titles from the official Cannes 2020 selection, giving the films a proper screening after Cannes was canceled due to the pandemic.
Deauville’s artistic director, Bruno Barde, curated the roster of Cannes pics from the selection of 56 titles chosen by Cannes’ artistic director Thierry Frémaux.
Among the Cannes films set to screen are Francis Lee’s romantic period drama Ammonite; DNA, directed by and starring Maïwenn; Last Words, Jonathan Nossiter’s end-of-world drama that tackles the climate crisis; and Yeon Sang-ho’s Peninsula, South Korean sequel to the zombie thriller Train to Busan.
“A town, beaches, views? No, it’s not Cannes, it’s Deauville. The host of one of France’s oldest film festivals will exceptionally take on the guise of la Croisette in this most unique year for cinema,” Frémaux said. “Along with Pierre Lescure and the team from Cannes, we are immensely pleased by the hospitality extended to us to screen films from the Official Selection on the Deauville boardwalk.”
Other Cannes titles that will be presented alongside Deauville‘s regular selection of U.S. films include French-language titles A Good Man from director and producer Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, Bruno Podalydès’ French Tech, Lucas Belvaux-directed Home Front, Charlène Favier’s Slalom and Teddy from directors Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma.
After screenings, many filmmakers and cast from this Cannes selection, including Mention-Schaar, will be present in Deauville to do Q&A’s, engaging with the general audience.
Deaauville’s all-American competition lineup this year includes Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow, Eleanor Coppola’s Love is Love is Love, Kajillionaire from Miranda July, Lee Isaac Chung with Minari and Uncle Frank, directed by Alan Ball. Nossiter’s Last Words is the only cross-over title chosen for both selections.
The Deauville American Film Festival will run through Sept. 4-Sept. 13 in Deauville, France.
