The Tony Award winning Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen is headed to the big screen, according to Deadline. Universal Pictures and Marc Platt Film are financing the adaptation, as they have picked up rights from songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (also known for writing music and lyrics to last year’s The Greatest Showman).
Dear Evan Hansen won Tony Awards for Best Musical as well as Best Actor and Best Actress for stars Ben Platt and Rachel Bay Jones. It is unclear whether or not the original cast will at all be returning for the film version.
Perks of Being a Wallflower writer and Wonder director Stephen Chbosky is in talks to direct, although negotiations have only just begun. No start date on production has yet been set.
Dear Evan Hansen dealt with the tender themes of social anxiety, depression, and suicide. It told the story of Evan Hansen, a teenager dealing with crippling social anxiety who concocts a lie to put him closer to the family of a peer who recently committed suicide.
