Fox’s reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise will continue in 2014 with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Dawn will follow up on the events of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes with Andy Serkis returning to play Ceasar. Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Judy Greer, and Keri Russell will join the cast.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes followed James Franco as a scientist searching for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. A side effect of his serum gave advanced intelligence to apes and made it possible for Franco’s lab chimp, Ceasar, to lead an army of chimpanzees in revolt. The first trailer for the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes shows what seems to be the aftermath of a widespread plague hinted at the end of Rise. With humanity weakened and desperate the stage appears set for a worldwide ape takeover. Ceasar’s followers appear at the end sporting warpaint and spears. The trailer gives no indication as to the fate of James Franco’s character from the first film.
As reported previously, the release date for Dawn was moved forward week to July 11 after the death of The Fast and the Furious star Paul Walker. The writers of Rise, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver both returned for Dawn and were joined by Mark Bomback and Scott Burns. Newcomer Matt Reeves directed.
