David Oyelowo Producing and Acting in ‘Another Day in the Death of America’

Producers Lara Alameddine, Daniel Dubiecki and Eric Eisner along with actor David Oyelowo (Selma) are developing an adaptation of the Gary Younge book Another Day in the death of America with Oyelowo also producing.

Oyelowo was asked at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival about why films about African-Americans are consistently overlooked at award shows; Oyelowo said:

No, look, historically, generally speaking, we, as black people, have been celebrated more for when we are subservient, when we are not being leaders or kings or being at the center of our own narrative.

Ava DuVernay, who worked with Oyelowo, was quoted recently as having coined the phrase “inclusion crisis” as opposed to “diversity” to discuss how the industry treats racial representation.

Oyelowo has previously acted in Selma (his Oscar snub was much discussed in the media) as well as Lee Daniels’ The Butler and Interstellar. He is also working in Americanah with Lupita Nyong’o, an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s book.

Another Day in the death of America is a book about gun violence and revolves around one day, “23 November 2013”. On this day, in spite of 10 children being victims of gun violence, none of the cases were reported nationally. The book itself will be published in the US on October 4. Younge is a recipient of the David Nyhan prize for political journalism.
