Director David Ayer (Fury) released a photo today on his Twitter account of the Suicide Squad cast together at last. The photo shows Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), Will Smith (Focus), Viola Davis (The Help), Jai Courtney (Insurgent), Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop), Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World), and a few others.

With the photo, Ayer let the world know the cast had their first read-through today. Notably missing from the photo is Jared Leto (The Dallas Buyers Club) – who will make his first appearance as the iconic Joker in the movie – as well as Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, who is rumored to have a cameo in the movie, and whom we saw a picture of in character for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice last month. Their lack of presence in the photo makes it more likely that the two actors will only have cameo appearances in Suicide Squad, as they are not part of the actual squad formed by federal agent Amanda Waller (Davis). The Joker will likely appear in some way connected to Harley Quinn (Robbie), as she is a psychiatrist who became criminally insane after the clown prince of darkness was placed under her care. If the rumors are true, and Luther appears in the movie, it seems likely he will have an even smaller cameo.
Cast read-through photos appear to be a new trend in the marketing plans for blockbuster films. Last year Disney released a photo of the cast for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Where that image looked like more like an official publicity still, this one looks like it was taken by Ayer himself, and was indeed posted from the director’s own Twitter account.
