Daniel Radcliffe has just signed on to star in Brooklyn Bridge, inspired by the true events of the construction of, you guessed it, the Brooklyn Bridge. There’s no distribution lined up at the moment – so no word on any potential U.S. release date – but the film is going to be shown to distributors at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin (February 6 – 14).
The script was written and is being directed by Douglas McGrath, Academy Award nominee for the screenplay of Bullets Over Broadway, which he co-wrote with Woody Allen. Christine Vachon of Killer Films (Boys Don’t Cry) is producing with Rose Ganguzza. Both Vachon and Ganguzza were producers of Kill Your Darlings, released this past fall, which starred Radcliffe as Allen Ginsberg during the rise of the Beat Generation.
We’ve yet to see an official synopsis, but the same details are making the rounds; from Variety: “The picture centers on the brilliant but inexperienced engineer Washington Roebling (Radcliffe), who is left to oversee the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge when his father dies. Besieged by calamity, danger and doubt, Washington’s obsession threatens his health and risks driving his family apart until he discovers he has an improbable ally… his charming and shrewd wife Emily.”
Of Radcliffe’s casting, Goldcrest Films’ (which is financing and handling post-production) Pascal Degove said, “Having Daniel’s involvement is a massive coup for the film, not only is he perfect for the role, but he’s consistently proved himself to be one of the very few actors who is genuinely a massive draw for audiences of all ages.” Filming is slated to start in August, with the female lead and supporting cast to be determined shortly.
Radcliffe is currrently filming the role of Igor, Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant in Frankenstein, due in 2015. He’s recently starred in Horns, with Juno Temple, and The F-Word with Jordan Hayes, both of which premiered at Toronto last year and have U.S. distribution lined up but are awaiting release dates.
