Based on the action-adventure RPG style in the Cyberpunk 2077 game, Paramount is looking to develop a film set in this same universe. Attached to produce is Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who will work in tandem with CD Projekt Red, the Poland-based game developer who holds the franchise rights.
At the core of the world of the source material, governments are overrun by mega corporations and human life is secondary to advanced robotic and automated technology that are classified as body enhancements. Deadline further describes this world and our eyes and ears into this world as follows:
The game is set in the fictional cyberpunk metropolis of Night City in California, within the dystopian Cyberpunk universe. At the center of the game is V, a mercenary who gets reluctantly imbued with a cybernetic “biochip” containing an engram of legendary rockstar and terrorist Johnny Silverhand. As Silverhand’s consciousness begins overwriting V’s own, the two must work together to separate from each other and save V’s life by confronting the Arasaka Corporation, a powerful megacorporation acting as the de facto ruler of the city.
The game is hugely popular, with the original Cyberpunk 2077 selling north of 40 million copies worldwide. Expansion of the game, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has added another 15 million in sales. This will also not be the first or last time that Paramount looks to build upon an established world in the video game space. The upcoming Street Fighter film, which is set for release later this month, is co-produced by Paramount and Legendary. They also have a Call of Duty movie in the works, which already has Peter Berg attached to direct, and he is currently working on the script alongside Taylor Sheridan.
