Critics’ Choice Awards Name ‘La La Land’ Best Picture of the Year

The 22nd Critics’ Choice Awards were handed out Sunday evening in a televised ceremony hosted by T.J. Miller (who can currently be seen in the comedy Office Christmas Party). The winners were picked by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest North American critics group that represents upwards of 300 television, radio and online journalists. What makes the Critics’ Choice Awards a particular curiosity in the awards race is how typically predictive the group can be in sorting through what the eventual Oscar line-up may look like – one caveat to sort through is the group handed out prizes considerably earlier in the season this year than in the past (usually their prizes are dolled out in January).

This year, perhaps as expected, it was Damien Chazelle’s lush modern musical La La Land that walked away with the most prizes, picking up 8 awards including Best Picture and Director mention for Chazelle himself. Casey Affleck and Mahershala Ali, currently sweeping critical kudos for their acclaimed work in Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight, respectively, picked up Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor trophies, as did Viola Davis for her work in Fences. The Best Actress race, particularly competitive this year, went to Natalie Portman for her admired leading performance in Jackie; Portman previously earned the Critics’ Choice and eventually the Oscar for Black Swan six years ago.

The long list of film prizes include not just the typical main line awards categories, but a bevy of crafts categories as well (where La La Land performed quite well) as well as tons of outlier prizes grouped by genre. The festivities salute a share-the-wealth vibe in celebrating the cinematic achievements of the past year in film.
