Christopher Nolan and Universal have made history, only not in the way you would expect. While most records held in the filmmaking industry involve views, profits, and things of that nature, Nolan’s The Odyssey breaks new ground. It is the first film selling advance tickets a year out.
While the tickets are not being sold in many theaters, (16 in the U.S. and 10 elsewhere) this is still surprising news and an interesting record to break. The tickets in question are specifically those for IMAX 70mm screenings.
After the success of Oppenheimer in IMAX, which grossed $975.8 million globally, Nolan and Universal were eager to keep the momentum going with The Odyssey. Of course, opening ticket sales without so much as a trailer would be ridiculous. This could be one of the reasons that a teaser trailer was released alongside Jurassic World Rebirth screenings.
Nolan’s The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Mia Goth. Its net budget is $250 million, marking the most expensive film in Nolan’s career. With such a high budget, reputable cast, and early marketing push, The Odyssey is setting itself up to be a great film. Hopefully it can maintain that momentum throughout its release next year.
