Crazy Rich Asians Director Jon M. Chu To Direct The Film Adaptation of ‘Wicked’

Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights director, Jon M. Chu is set to viewers beyond Kansas. The Director was inherited filmmaking duties from Stephen Daldry on Broadway hit Wicked. Daldry departed from the project that has been in works for over a decade last October due to scheduling conflicts. There is still little to no information about who will star in the film or when it will be released. The adaptation was taken off of Universal’s film schedule due to the pandemic.

Chu shares this excitement on Twitter writing “Most of my life I have felt out of place, weird and different. I hid behind my camera because people liked to be filmed and I could disappear. But when I saw Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s ‘Wicked’ over 15 years ago as it was being workshopped in San Francisco I couldn’t unsee it.”

Wicked the Broadway musical hit by Stephen Schwartz is based off the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire which retells the classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The musical takes place in the Land of Oz before Dorothy arrives in Oz. Wicked tells the story of two polar opposites, Glinda (Glinda the Good Witch) and Elphaba infamously known as the Wicked Witch of the West.

“So, who wants to be Elphaba and Glinda?” ended Chu on his tweet.
