‘Coyote vs. Acme’ Sparks Bidding War Among Major Studios And Streaming Platforms

The infamous Looney Tunes feature Coyote vs. Acme has been caught in a massive bidding war between many studios and streaming platforms. Set to release on July 21, 2023, director Dave Green’s work had been scrapped due to a controversial decision by Warner Bros. Studio.

Despite spending $70M on the project, Warner Bros had put the film on hold indefinitely, deciding to sell the film to interested parties instead. Netflix and Paramount have already made a bid, with Paramount proposing a theatrical release. Sony and Apple have also viewed the film but are uninterested in buying or making bids.

Coyote vs. Acme follows Wile E. Coyote as he plans to take down the ACME corporation that– like in the cartoons– sells poor ACME devices that ruin his efforts to capture his arch nemesis, the Road Runner. In this witty Looney Tunes take, Coyote goes against the company’s CEO, portrayed by John Cena.

The Coyote’s cancellation had riled up many filmmakers in the business and fans alike. According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer-director BenDavid Grabinski, who has previously worked with Green, tweeted, “Coyote vs. Acme is a great movie. The best of its kind since [Who Framed] Roger Rabbit … The leads are super likable. It’s beautifully shot … I thought the goal of this business was to make hit movies?” There was even talk of holding a “funeral screening,” though it wouldn’t be appropriate for a project that may have hope of finding a home.
