On The Set With Michael Douglas And Diane Keaton Filming ‘And So It Goes’

Many of you might be asking, who cares? After all, And So It Goes is being labeled a retirement age rom-com with heartfelt undertones. Still you ask, who cares?

According to The Hollywood Reporter and producer Mark Damon, And So It Goes is being made to satisfy a shifting movie demographic. “Young people have too many diversions and options to spend time in a movie theater, it’s the older generation that is filling the seats in theaters week after week”, says Damon.

Surprise box-office hits like the British comedy/drama, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Tom Wilkinson, and the American comedy It’s Complicated, with Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, were two financially successful films catering to older audiences. This viewpoint is one that secures a place, at least for now, for Hollywood legends to keep working.

And So It Goes was originally  helmed by Muriel’s Wedding director P.J. Hogan, who dropped out for unknown reasons.  Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally, American President), has now stepped in to direct, and is producing along with Damon and Alan Greisman.

And So It Goes, which started filming in Stanford, Ct. this week, brings together Michael Douglas (Wall Street, Behind The Candelabra),  and Diane Keaton (The Godfather, Annie Hall), who have never worked together before. They play star-crossed sixty somethings, Douglas a self-centered real-estate tycoon and Keaton his high-spirited, fun-loving neighbor.  The former’s life is upended when he learns he has a 10-year-old granddaughter by his estranged son and the child is abruptly left on his doorstep with no place to go. Sterling Jerins (World War Z, The Conjuring) plays the granddaughter.

The premise might sound cliche, but the script has been penned by the Oscar-nominated, Mark Andrus (As Good As It Gets). Expect hilarity to ensue.

And So It Goes is being produced under the Foresight Unlimited and Castle Rock Entertainment banners, with Tamara Birkmoe, Grant Cramer, Jared Ian Goldman, and Remington Chase executive producing.

A 2014 release date is expected.
