Fans crowded Hall H this evening at San Diego Comic-Con, likely hoping for just a glimpse into what Avengers: Infinity War might have to offer. That’s not exactly what they got, but Marvel had a lot to offer fans for three of their upcoming big ticket superhero standalones — Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor:Ragnarok, and Black Panther. All of the stars and directors came out to support the films and Marvel President Kevin Feige treated audiences to a few casting surprises as well as never-before-seen footage. Read the run-down of everything that happened below:
- Marvel premiered a small montage of footage from Ant-Man and the Wasp which included the wasp flying.
- Michelle Pfeiffer has been announced to join the Ant-Man cast as Janet van Dyke. Hannah John Kamen will be playing Ghost, and Laurence Fishburne is also among the new cast members. Michael Douglass was confirmed to return to his role.
- The Ant-Man announcements were accompanied by a montage sequence featuring a pre-recorded vignette of Paul Rudd and Michael Pena in character. They’re sitting at a table staring at the camera and saying they’re going to break down the entirety of the MCU. They proceed to break down each and every movie using hilarious props and making funny jokes (they kept showing a picture of Robert Downey Jr. in makeup, likely from a Chaplin movie years ago). Once the montage ended, they cut to Michelle Pfeiffer and asked her what she thought. She said, “Sounds like a bit of a sausage party.” Michelle and Evangeline Lilly start walking away together while the talk about how it’s possible to go the bathroom in the suits. The last piece of footage scene is Ant-Man in Giant Man form trying to hide amidst skyscrapers.
- Captain Marvel was confirmed to include Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and the film will be taking place in the year 1990.
- Captain Marvel will debut the first MCU appearance of Skrulls.
- For the Thor: Ragnarok panel, Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Karl Urban, and director Taika Waititi all appeared onstage.
- The Thor panel featured two sequences from the film. First was just after Thor’s capture on Sakaar where he’s restrained being sent through a tunnel where a robotic voice is explaining his enslavement to the Grand Master. The next sequence is Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie selling Thor to the Grandmaster (Goldblum). After that he is thrown in jail and meets the rock monster Korg that Taika Waititi voices. From there, fans witnessed an elaborate montage featuring Hela (Cate Blanchett) destroying Asgard, Skurge (Urban) assisting Hela, Bruce Banner realizing Thor defeated him in the arena, and Hulk fighting Surtur the fire demon (who is about ten times his size!).
- The Black Panther panel featured appearances from cast members Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, and Lupita Nyong’o as well as director Ryan Coogler.
- A sequence from the film was played in which Martin Freeman’s character Everett K. Ross and Danai Gurira’s character Okoye attempt to capture Ulysses Klaue (Serkis) at a casino. At the end, Klaue reveals his robotic hand is actually some kind of sonic laser (it transforms).
- A massive montage follows expanding on the footage from the trailer. Black Panther is able to switch his suit on almost as if by magic. Killmonger (Jordan) has a showdown with the Black Panther and apparently has some kind of instantly appearing suit as well. The entire cast went bonkers after the footage played as they had never seen it before themselves.
- After the Black Panther cast left the stage, Hemsworth, Ruffalo, and Boseman returned to introduce Joe Russo who introduced Avengers: Infinity War.
- Most of what followed was a repeat of what was shown to fans at last weekend’s D23 expo. However, the crowd was in roaring spirits to see the first reveal of Thanos (Josh Brolin), as well as Iron Man (Downey Jr.), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and the iron spidey-suit, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos blowing up a moon, and a massive battle in space.
- While it doesn’t look much like how the Infinity Gauntlet portrayed the conflict, it does look as legitimately horrible as it should be. Everything and everyone look defeated and terrified. Brolin as Thanos is confident and intimidating without being silly or typical. He almost revels in the violence.
Alas, while fans wait for the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel gave fans a lot of goodies to hold them over at the panel. Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters on July 6, 2018; Thor: Ragnarok debuts on November 3 of this year; Black Panther will turn up on February 16, 2018; and Infinity War is slated for the big screen on May 4, 2018.
