Sofia Coppola has already lined up a sterling ensemble cast for her upcoming period western The Beguiled with Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman already enlisted. Variety reports that Colin Farrell may soon join the film as well. The film is a remake of a 1971 movie which starred Clint Eastwood and was directed by Don Siegel with material based on the novel by Thomas Cullinan. If Farrell does indeed join the film, he would take on the role originated by Eastwood. Focus Features has already signed on to distribute the movie – the same distributor of Coppola’s Somewhere and her Oscar-winning breakout Lost in Translation.
Set in the Civil War, The Beguiled centers around a wounded Yankee soldier who finds solace in a Confederate all-women boarding school In the process, the soldier cons his way into the hearts of the women at the school. Coppola is not only directing the film but penning the screenplay. Dunst memorably worked with Coppola twice before in her debut feature The Virgin Suicides (2000) and the Oscar-winning Marie Antoinette (2006) and Fanning previously worked with the filmmaker on Somewhere; both Kidman and Farrell, if plans come to fruition, would collaborate with Coppola for the first time.
For Farrell, this announcement marks what has been a fairly stellar year for the Irish actor. Currently, Farrell can be seen in theaters in Yorgos Lanthimos’ indie breakout The Lobster, for which he has received some of the best reviews of his career. He will collaborate with Lanthimos again on the upcoming drama The Killing of Sacred Deer (coincidentally, Kidman is also attached to that picture) and will next be seen the highly anticipated Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
As of now, no production timeline has been established yet for The Beguiled.
