With the anticipation of tomorrow’s full trailer looming, 20th Century Fox released two clips from Oscar-nominated Ridley Scott’s (Prometheus) new film, The Counselor, written by Cormac McCarthy, Pulitzer Prize winner for his novel, The Road.
The movie, starring Michael Fassbender, who previously worked with Scott in Prometheus, is about a lawyer from the Southwest who takes his chance in the drug industry, thinking it won’t change him at all. Both clips, one with Brad Pitt, the other with Javier Bardem, suggest the utter naivete of Fassbender’s character in thinking he enter the drug-running underworld without getting a little singed. The clips certainly showcase McCarthy’s trademark style, with explosive tensions obviously brimming just under a calmer surface. Based on pedigree, the cast and director would certainly appear capable of communicating the massive quantities of subtext that will likely be key to this movie; in addition to the three male leads, The Counselor stars Cameron Diaz (Bad Teacher) as a woman named Malkina and Penelope Cruz (To Rome With Love) as Fassbender’s love interest, Laura. Bardem is the only cast member with experience in a McCarthy work, having played Anton Chigurh in the Coen Brothers’ adaptation of No Country For Old Men, but it’s clear from this clip alone that he will be playing a very different character this time around.
A teaser trailer dropped in late June, but tomorrow’s will be the first full theatrical trailer for the film, which is planned to be released October 25.
