Marvel is fresh off the $1 billion-plus run of Captain America: Civil War earlier this summer. Not only that, Comic Con 2016 has been great showcase of what’s to come from the studio. Fans got a great look at some new footage from Doctor Strange, as well as getting the wonderful news of Brie Larson being officially attached to play Captain Marvel. And even though the studio has an enormous amount of exciting upcoming projects, one on-going series still has many unanswered questions remaining. What was previously two-part Avengers movie that was going to be called Infinity War has been recently changed to just the first film retaining that subtitle, while the second will apparently get a bit of a rebranding.
Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron was hugely successful back in 2014, grossing just shy of $1.5 billion at the box office. Putting many of Marvel’s iconic heroes together on screen has proven to be a very smart move for Marvel, but they are ramping up the stakes even higher for Infinity War. Screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus have had major presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for many years now. They are tapped with taking on both Avengers sequels, along with directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War, Joe and Anthony Russo, taking the helm. It’s big mission to accomplish, particularly for the writers who are having to construct such huge stories. During a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, Markus and McFeely gave fans an update about where they are on the scripts.
We’re many drafts in. We’re on the third draft of movie one and the second draft of movie two. [We’re writing them in tandem] as much as we can. On any given day, you’re only working on one but that doesn’t mean that next week, you aren’t working on the other one. And certainly, notes are coming in and all sorts of production stuff is coming in, like for instance, ‘that thing over there is now a window not a door so adjust that.’ Or, ‘we’re not going to this town now, we’re going to this town.’ That kind of stuff happens constantly and will continue to happen for the next few months.
One of things that the MCU is known for is the incredible amount of connected stories and timelines. Considering that the upcoming Avengers movies will have a more heroes together than in any of Marvel’s previous installments, it just ups the ante for Markus and McFeely. They went on to discuss just how much time is devoted to figuring how all the characters and worlds connect.
When we lock ourselves in a room with the Russo brothers and a couple of execs from Marvel, one wall has cards for movie one and the other wall has cards for movie two and another wall has little baseball cards of every character still alive in the Marvel universe – down to Darcy’s boyfriend in Thor 2 – literally, anybody who did not die and has been established as alive. And then we looked at that began to shuffle the cards around. So basically, the big scene is when Darcy’s boyfriend and Galactus get together and….[laughs].
There will be no shortage of Marvel films in the coming years, and the Avengers sequels are probably the biggest of them all. We will get to see dozens of their favorite characters together for the first time, so it should be pretty spectacular. The minds that are tasked with making them come to life seem like ideal candidates, so fans can rest easy.
