Before his Oscar nominated turn as the title character in 2023’s Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy was perhaps best known for his work in the six season BBC series Peaky Blinders. In an interview with Desert Island Discs, Murphy commented on the creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight’s plans to make a follow up film. “If there is more story to tell, and if Stephen Knight delivers a script like I know he can, then I will be there. I mean, if we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.”
Peaky Blinders is loosely inspired by the real life English youth gang of the same name that was active in in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In the show, Murphy played Tommy Shelby, the ambitious leader of the Peaky Blinders family gang as he navigates the rapidly changing environment of post-World War I England. The popular series ran for six seasons, starting in 2013 and ending in 2022. In the show’s finale, Murphy’s Shelby leaves behind his old life in order to start anew. Fans of the show are hoping to see Murphy’s character reunite with his family in the upcoming movie.
The Peaky Blinders film is still in development. While Knight is still working on a script, it may be on hold due to his commitment to write an upcoming Star Wars film. Hopefully, fans will be able to see the next step in Tommy Shelby’s story soon.
