According to The Wrap, Cillian Murphy has just been cast in Christopher Nolan‘s World War II film Dunkirk. The 39-year old Irish actor is no stranger to Nolan, as he has also appeared in Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy. Murphy will play supporting role, however, as the movie is set to star new comer Fionn Whitehead as well as British actors Jack Lowden (Pan), Aneurin Barnard (Legend) and One Direction singer Harry Styles. The rest of the supporting cast includes acting vets Tom Hardy (The Revenant), Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn) and recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies).
Nolan wrote the script which recounts the evacuation of of Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo, the British military operation that saved the lives of 330,000 Allied soldiers who were surrounded by German forces. Being the cinephile that he is, Nolan will also shoot the film in IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography with the intent of capturing the best picture quality possible and immersing the audience as much as possible.
Murphy is coming off his latest role in Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea and is planning on appearing in Ben Wheatley’s crime drama Free Fire opposite Oscar winner Brie Larson and and Sean Ellis’ WWII thriller Anthropoid. Dunkirk is slated for a July 17, 2017 worldwide release in IMAX 70mm, 35mm, and digital formats.
