Christopher Nolan’s $100 Million WWII Drama ‘Oppenheimer’ to Hit Theaters in 2023

British filmmaker Christopher Nolan is set to make his way back to the big screens in the summer of 2023 with Oppenheimer. This film is confirmed to be a historical drama that depicts the life of theoretical physicist and creator of the Atomic Bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film is to star Cillian Murphy, as Oppenheimer, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt, 

Nolan’s new film’s budget of $100 million has caused many to worry about whether or not it will be successful in the box office, as it is a film not based upon a popular superhero or novel, nor is it a film marketed towards children. Although if there was anyone who can historically turn a profit at the box office it is Nolan, who has garnered $836 million globally for 2010’s Inception, $701 million for 2014’s Interstellar, and $526 million for 2017’s Dunkirk. 

It’s clear to say Nolan has a loyal fanbase, but will they be tuning in for another WWII drama that, unlike Dunkirk, is solely an American story? This may turn off some of the international audience, but who is to say what will be fruitful in box office returns when according to Variety, “There are (real) movies in the works based on the card game Uno, the crunchy snack Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and the invention of Viagra.”
