In another demonstration of Christopher Nolan’s groundbreaking filmmaking style, his next film, The Odyssey, will be shot entirely using Imax cameras. It will be the first commercial feature to accomplish such a feat.
Oscar-winning cinematographer and frequent Nolan collaborator, Hoyte Van Hoytema, previously pushed the bounds of Imax while working on 2023’s Oppenheimer. The best picture winner was the first to use Imax black-and-white 65mm film.
Over the past year, Imax has gained significant popularity. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan set an Imax re-release date because of the demand. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning starring Tom Cruise had its Imax debut in Cannes, and the upcoming Brad Pitt movie, F1: The Movie, also used Imax cameras.
The equipment needed to be adapted to meet Nolan’s needs. Imax cameras were quite heavy and loud. There were also issues with the ability to watch dailies easier. The company responded by providing him with new cameras that are 30% quieter and substantially lighter. They also have a quicker processing speed to allow easier access to the dailies.
As of now, the cameras are reserved for Nolan, however, Imax plans to rent them out to other directors after The Odyssey release. The upcoming feature, which Nolan wrote, follows Odysseus in his journey home after the Trojan War. The cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Lupita Nyong’o, to name a few.
The Odyssey is set for release in theaters July 17, 2026.
