Christopher Nolan On Casting Daughter In ‘Oppenheimer’

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is just around the corner. Based on the true events of the atomic bomb, created by Julius Robert Oppenheimer, the film is generating lot of buzz, especially with its release coinciding with that of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Nolan talked about casting his daughter, Flora Nolan, in small yet important role, Deadline reports, “We needed someone to do that small part of a somewhat experimental and spontaneous sequence.”

On IMDb, Flora’s role is credited as “Burn Victim.” This is her second acting credit in a film from her father, first being in 2014’s Interstellar, as simply “Girl on Truck.”

In regards to her role, Nolan brought up the film Peeping Tom, and how the director of that film used his nine-year-old son. Director Michael Powell had his son play the younger version of the serial killer the film was centered around. Nolan made it clear that he didn’t intend for that connection to be drawn.

“But yes, I mean, gosh, you’re not wrong. Truthfully, I try not to analyze my own intentions. But the point is that if you create the ultimate destructive power it will also destroy those who are near and dear to you. So I suppose this was my way of expressing that in what, to me, were the strongest possible terms.”

Oppenheimer releases on July 21st and stars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt.
