During a recent interview with the Associated Press, Christopher Nolan has spoken out in defense of the important role franchises play in the Hollywood film industry’s ecosystem.
Nolan gave his opinion on the debate over the current impact of superhero franchises in Hollywood. While the director made sure to stress the importance of originality, he also believed in providing a space for superhero blockbusters based on pre-existing IP (i.e. Marvel, DC, etc.) within the film industry. It should also be noted that Nolan himself has also partaken in this genre of filmmaking in his Batman trilogy.
Nolan answered pragmatically, stating, “There’s always a balance in Hollywood between established titles that can assure a return in audience and give people more of what they want…But there also always has to be respect for the audience’s desire for something new.”
In September interview with GQ, Martin Scorsese found these blockbusters to be a “danger…to our culture.” He expanded on this statement further, asserting that “there are going to be generations now that think movies are only those — that’s what movies are.”
Scorsese added that filmmakers themselves need to fight against the comic book and franchise culture dominating the film industry currently if they want to “save cinema” for future generations of moviegoers.
