In a playful Twitter post to the fans of the franchise, Christopher McQuarrie confirmed that he will write and direct two more Mission Impossible films. The director has already experienced success with the Paramount action franchise in his two previous films, Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible- Fallout – the latter receiving an outstanding 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $791 million in the global box office. With Fallout, McQuarrie became the first and only director to direct more than one Mission Impossible movie; McQuarrie is now poised to have a total of four entries in the Mission Impossible franchise.
Lead actor Tom Cruise also confirmed his return to the Mission Impossible franchise on Twitter. Cruise has been a staple of the the series since his initial debut as Ethan Hunt in the original Mission Impossible film in 1996. While the titles for M:I-7 and M:I-8 have yet to be announced, Cruise’s post indicates that the films will be scheduled for back to back Summer releases in 2021 and 2022. According to Variety, McQuarrie has begun work on the film’s script and plans to start shooting before the end of 2019.
While it may be irresponsible to begin speculating what the seventh and eighth installments in the Mission Impossible franchise might have in store for Ethan Hunt – I can’t help but wonder if the scheduled back to back releases are a possible indication of an epic two-part conclusion for the action franchise. Only time – and Paramount’s marketing team – will tell what McQuarrie has in store for Ethan Hunt and IMF team.
