Chris Rock Makes First Public Appearance and Comments on Being Slapped By Will Smith

Will Smith slapped Chris Rock across the face at the Oscars after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, saying “G. I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it” in reference to her shaved head. Smith’s wife suffers from an autoimmune disorder, Alopecia, which leads to hair loss. Variety has reported on Chris Rock’s thoughts on Will Smith.

Rock made an emotional return to the stage at his first public appearance since the Oscars at a stand-up show at the Wilbur Theater in Boston on Wednesday, March 30th.

After a long-standing ovation, “Let me be all misty and s***,” said Rock with tears in his eyes. He then exclaimed, “Yo, let me do the show!” After some more applause, Rock addressed the big elephant in the room. “How was your weekend?” he began drawing a wave of laughter from the audience. “I don’t have a bunch of shit about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend. I’m still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point, I’ll talk about that shit. And it will be serious and funny.”

An audience member then proceeded to chant, “Fuck Will Smith!” but Rock ignored the chant and continued on his hour-long set. “I’m going to tell some jokes,” he said. “It’s nice to just be out.”

Variety captured an audio recording of Rock’s response which was posted on their Instagram page.

The Wilbur Theatre found an increased number of people outside of its doors due to the infamous incident. Tickets for Rock’s show shot up massively in price, as some reported paying between $800 and $1200 for their tickets. Rock’s stand-up show was the first glimpse into his public opinion on the subject, but since he is “still processing what happened” there is surely more to come from the comedian.
