As most of us know, writer-director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, James Gunn, was fired by Disney earlier this summer after now-deleted tweets emerged that showed Gunn joking about sensitive subjects including pedophilia and rape. Gunn has publicly apologized for the 2008 and 2011 tweets, and now the cast of the films, specially “Starlord” Chris Pratt, are speaking up in defense of the director.
Pratt referred to the current situation as “not an easy time” for him as well as the rest of the cast as they look toward the future of the beloved films. Pratt continued with the following in regards to the firing:
“We all love James and he’s a good friend of ours, but we also really love playing the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s a complicated situation for everybody. And you know, we just want to move forward and do what’s right and be the best people we can be.”
Pratt alongside cast members including Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, and Vin Diesel signed an open letter pertaining to their carefully thought-out feelings toward Gunn and his firing through explanations of their experiences with him on set during the first two films.
The first time Pratt or any other cast member from the films found out about Gunn’s firing was during Comic-Con, and Pratt had this to say about his personal reaction as well as the open letter:
“I love going to Comic-Con but I ended up not doing a lot of interviews around that time just because it was so shocking. All I know is we put a lot of time, thought, and effort into the statement that we released about it. And I think we all kind of want that statement to be essentially what we have to say about it. And we were pretty clear and honest about how we feel.”
The first two installments of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise made over $1.5 billion in global box offices.
