Call Jane, which is currently in production in Connecticut, has added a bunch of new cast members to join already announced cast members Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels), Sigourney Weaver (Avatar), Kate Mara (A Teacher), and Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country) of which Deadline has learned exclusively
Chris Messina (Birds of Prey), Cory Michael Smith (Carol), Aida Turturro (The Sopranos), and newcomer Grace Edwards are set to join the women’s rights drama directed by the screenwriter of drama Carol, Phyllis Nagy.
Set in the summer of 1968, during which demonstrations rock the Democratic National Convention. Joy Griffin (Banks), a housewife and mother, faces a potentially fatal pregnancy that no doctor will authorize her to terminate the pregnancy. Joy meets a community of women who facilitate safe abortions for women in need with no questions asked after she runs out of options and has little time to waste. The group’s generosity and bravery save Joy’s life while instilling in her a new sense of purpose: to help other women take control of their lives. Virginia (Weaver), the leader, takes Joy under her wing, and amid the risks they face in the pre-Roe v. Wade era, they devise a scheme to extend the group and provide safe abortions to all women who need them, regardless of what they can pay.
Messina will play Joy’s loving and supportive husband, Will but follows the rules to the letter as a promising criminal litigator.
Smith will play Dean, a doctor who isn’t really a doctor and helps perform the abortions.
Turturro will play Sister Mike, a nun and vital member of the Janes.
Edwards will play Joy’s 13-year-old daughter.
