Chris Evans’ Nomad Buzz Silenced by Joe Russo

During a meet and greet last week, Chris Evans was caught signing one lucky fan’s shield as both “Cap” and “Nomad”. This Instagram post was the spark for considerable amount speculation on what’s to come in the approaching Avengers: Infinity War.

For those of you who aren’t well versed in Captain America’s history, allow us to catch you up to speed. In the comic books Nomad is the moniker Cap selects for himself after renouncing his ties to the American government. He does this upon uncovering a sinister conspiracy involving the U.S. and a terrorist organization known as Secret Empire, which creates a very similar environment to what is going on in the MCU with Hydra.

The film Avengers: Civil War ends with Cap leaving behind his shield after fighting Iron Man, essentially rejecting his role as Captain America. Also, we can spot Cap in the Infinity War trailer wearing an all-black bodysuit rather than his traditional red, white, and blue getup. All of these things have led fans to believe that Evans will be taking on the role of Nomad this time around. However, this theory was put to rest recently when co-director Joe Russo addressed it during an interview with Cinema Blend, saying that they wanted “deconstruct him, to take him in a different direction,” adding that Rogers is “on a very specific journey as a character. Some people have suspected that he may be Nomad heading into Avengers 3 and [Russo] wouldn’t say that he is exactly Nomad, but he is the spirit of that character.”

Essentially, Russo stated that Cap will basically be Nomad in philosophical beliefs, but not in name. Based off of this response it would seem that Steve Rogers is to operate as a vigilante with super powers in the upcoming film. Which, when you think about it, makes more sense. Why does Steve Roger’s even need the alias “Captain America” in the first place? The whole world already knows his real identity.
