‘Children of Blood and Bone’ Novel To be Adapted by Kay Oyegun and Lucasfilm

“This Is Us” and “Queen Sugar” writer Kay Oyegun is in the process signing onto and penning the script for a movie adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone, according to an exclusive report by Deadline. The film will be adapted with the help of director Rick Famuyiwa (The Flash) and George Lucas’ production company Lucasfilms. Sources have stated that this film attracted the attention of Lucasfilm’s studio president Kathleen Kennedy and, should they remain attached to the project, will mark the company’s first original film made since the Disney takeover that isn’t part of the Indiana Jones or Star Wars franchises. Lucasfilms’s involvement will likely put the film in a position of high priority and speculation for critics. The film was previously being developed under Fox.

Children of Blood and Bone is a young adult novel that follows the story of Zélie Adebola, a native of the fictional land called Orïsha. Orïsha is a place filled with magic in every corner but, once an overbearing ruler takes over the land, he attempts to quash all traces of magic’s existence. With the help of a princess, Zélie sets out to preserve the magic in the land while dodging dangerous obstacles in his path. Adeyemi drew inspiration for her novel from West African and Yoruba culture, along with stories such as Harry Potter.
